Google with it’s services ranging from checkouts to personal emails to your office document. It might, very soon, be synonymous for anything online, similar to a search. I wouldn’t be surprised, if someday, the netizens start using terms like googline, googleb and so on. Okay, may be the words sound too bad but after all its google – the Big G, who knows what it brings next. And as a part of an active online community, I use each and every Google provided service and that brings me to a very interesting point and of course the reason of this article.
I do realize that I’ve used a scary title to this entry. Why? Because Google is making me feel vulnerable to security threats online. How? With its ease of use that allows me to access every Google service without being asked for my userid and password. All I’ve to do is login in to my Gmail account and after that I can access any google service as if it’s the same application. Anyone can argue what’s the problem, it being such a nice and cool feature but you will realize if you consider your online security important.
Let me start with a simple scenario – Say, I use a shared computer in an internet cafe, I access my Gmail account and accidentally selected the “Remember me” option while signing in and forgot to click the logout option. I close the browser and went home. I know what you are thinking now, my Gmail account is gone because the next guy who uses gmail, after I did, will see all my emails without being asked to login and can do anything he wants with my email account. I know it’s unfortunate and my email account is compromised. But wait, there’s more – my Google calendar is exposed, my spreadsheets are gone, my personal information is compromised, my Google Checkout is in risk and much more. Long story short, if some how, some one knows my Gmail password, he or she can access every Google service that I’ve been using from personal to finances with almost no effort.
Arguably, Google is trying to make it easy for us to use its services with a one time login. However, getting prompted to sign in before using any service is far better than living under the fear of losing your important information. I would still consider keeping up with a passwords and login ids, a smart choice, compared to something which can potentially compromise my personal and financial information.
